Why are some individuals able to effortlessly explain complex ideas while others struggle?
In conversation with Steve Durbin, Professor Brian Cox points out that truly grasping a concept or subject requires more than just a surface-level understanding. He states that within the scientific field and beyond, it is crucial to recognise and admit the limits of what you know and to be honest about your understanding in what he terms “intellectual honesty”. He expresses that being able to communicate complex ideas effectively, whether to experts or non-experts, hinges on having a deep, internalised knowledge of a subject.
If you find yourself giving a presentation and falling back on jargon… That’s probably a warning sign… that you’ve not really internalised what you’re talking about because you can’t vocalise it.
